OOC: Just had to say it. Credit goes to here: rpggamer.org/page.php?page=3008 and the TV series Outlaw Star in general for this bitchin' concept. Also for OG, for reminding me of the wisdom of evolution. I had thought of this for a while, but I needed a good IC reason for it.
IC:
An ordinary Browning Superposed shotgun. Over-unders like these were converted by gunsmiths and Master Smiths based in the Qiangquan School to form the basis of the Starwind Rifle.
Reacting to the news of Lebran Pharmaceuticals's recent success with anti-Force vaccinations, the People's Acolytes as a whole have remained generally neutral on the issue, if somewhat concerned but comfortable that its not being used on them.
However, a group of People's Acolytes felt that it was another in a series of anti-psychic attacks met secretly to discuss ways of attempting to develop ways which could circumvent restrictions Force and psychic powers imposed by technologies such as those that existed in the United Colonies and elsewhere.
The "conference," little more than a series of private dinner parties attended by various temple heads in random locations, IM chats and done without knowledge of Junko Tadanobu, Chin Tai-Wong or Grigori Batov, nonetheless resulted in a "white paper" of sorts being issued to the varied project members, who came to call themselves the "Supper Club" due to the nature of their meetings over meals of various foods.
After all, to have this project revealed to the Acolytes at large would bring yet another unwelcome complication to an organization already coping with changing times, and would also provoke a public outcry likely from a public skeptical of the Acolytes in the new era.
Kept secret from the other People's Acolytes, this paper proposed the development of a controversial new weapon--a firearm that would be specially designed to fire cartridges that mimicked particularly esoteric Force Powers such as Force Stasis, Force Storm, or Force Insanity that could not be easily replicated through conventional ballistic, mass-driven or energy-based weaponry.
The firearm concept itself was proposed by the Qiangquan, who felt such a delivery device would be suitable for the kind of work required by the Supper Club. A debate over the caliber of the firearm led to the adoption of a controversial cartridge concept based on the .450 Nitro Express, to be fired from a specially modified over-under double rifle, rebuilt from a Browning shotgun, built on the principle of the Tennenbaum System.
The Shinmei contribution, delivered by an ex-Dare Death squadron member named Rutger Nikonov of Hajarra, was the modification of the Tennenbaum Ignition System to trigger a completely different operation instead.
Corresponding via runner, the Tennenbaum-Nikonov System proposed the creation of cartridges built out of the same materials that the Hajarran Lightningblades were manufactured from, along with the imprintation of psychokinetic chemicals distilled from Luxembourgian Mindworms, known for their psychic assaults on wary travelers, as well as a dash of Adam and a bit of "red sand" to boost psychokinetic properties further. The power itself would be imprinted onto the weapon, utilizing Magicus Mundus-based magic spells, conventional Force incantations psychically imprinted on the cartridge itself, as well as a variety of magics from various sci-fi and fantasy universes, as well as Greek, Middle Eastern, Chinese, Japanese, Native American and Wiccan, and Lovecraftian mythos, in order to ensure a multiple redundancy against blocking from technological and spiritual interference. The materials would be impregnated with specialized stimulants which would promote the activities within the round.
The cartridge, upon ignition by the Tennenbaum Striker, would be energized only partially, with most of the initial spike going to driving the projectile out of the barrel and storing the rest in a capacitor. However, upon preprogrammed detonation or impact with a target, the Energized capacitor would be triggered, energizing the rest of the round and making the power possible within moments, either directly or equivalently via some other magic process.
Originally, 20 known cartridges were plotted out by the Supper Club, but a rulling by the National School reps resulted in the allowance for further "custom" cartridges produced by masters who possessed the gun to mimic all known powers. Acolytes who desire to "handload" their rounds are advised to do so only for particularly devastating or helpful powers, as tests with the early Starwind rifles resulted in extreme fatigue for the user after extended usage.
The project, dubbed Starwind after the name of a particularly good restaurant based in Luxembourgia's Level 18 Hab, a well off district in the city of Hammertongs, began to take shape soon enough.
Generally, at this point, the Starwind rifles are rare, with their .450 Nitro cartridges being just as rare, all due to the expense and time needed to make the specialized cartridges. Even with the aid of the Master Smiths, on average, it takes approximately 24 hours to manufacture a single cartridge--and that's with intensive spiritual preparation to produce high quality cartridges.
One particular concern of the Supper Club is that the Starwind Rifles can easily be used by Force-neutral or those individuals who have no Force-sensitivity whatsoever; hence, one reason why they are distributed so sparingly.
