The PAVE Spike Remote Controlled Vehicle program is a program developed jointly between ERIS and the various elements of the Republican armed forces. Given the present cultural and doctrinal emphasis on manned equipment in the Republic's armed forces (with some even dismissing drones as "Goddamn toys doing the jobs we've got scout snipers doing already"), it should be noted that ERIS has been the biggest champion of UAVs. although members of the Republic's special operations community as well as the Navy have been very enthusiastic about expanded UAV usage.
The objective of PAVE Spike, at the current moment, is to develop sophisticated reconnaissance vehicles which can be used to provide real-time battlefield intelligence, particularly in the identification of high-value targets such as enemy leadership, ammunition supply areas, and known sources of magical power, although militarized applications are possible (especially as other nations such as the Starways Congress's member states and the Kiith Expeditionary Forces [read: Feazanthia] are known to employ sophisticated UAVs and ELINT gathering mechanisms).
As such, they come in a variety of sizes, ranging from hand-held models the size of basketballs and baseballs (known as the "Peregrine" Series) meant to be used by commando teams, to larger models the size of say, a Ford Focus (the "Eagle" and "Falcon" models respectively) that can be deployed from ordinary airstrips and possess more sophisticated gear. For those ERIS missions taking place on MT worlds--we're looking at the Not-Dornie-Earth and the Ravenstenskia War, mainly--conversions to bring drones up to PAVE Spike protocols are available for implementation on various UAV models found in many modern tech armies, such as the US-made MQ-9 Reaper and various Russian/Chinese models.
The PAVE Spike Program drones, generally, possess the following characteristics.
--A proprietary "Multifrequency Secure Communications Suite," developed at the New Yorktown facility. Essentially, this is a system designed to communicate video and audio information with secure Republican-made communications devices or other such systems used by allied forces, using a multiplicity of communications frequencies (AM/FM radio, subspace, etc.). For said "Republican-made communications devices," it uses a modified One-Time-Pad type encryption system, with a quantum computer onboard designed to produce the most random series of codes possible to ensure maximum security. For said "other such systems used by allied forces," it uses various other encryption methods to ensure secure communication and to limit the possibility of decryption by snoops. In turn, this suite can also be used offensively to try and hack into enemy comms and computers, either using onboard computers or by allowing a hacker based out of a remote location (usually, some Cybernetic Studies jock in Seoul) to break into enemy mainframes for greater accuracy. Further, this suite also makes it so the drone can also act as a "broadcast antenna," enabling better communications between allied forces or acting as a means to hijack enemy comms signals, so as to engage in psyops.
--A New Yorktown designed "Multiphase Sensor System." In plain English, this is a system designed with a high-resolution camera and microphone system as well as a Psychokinetic Energy (PKE) Meter to pick up enemy movements and sounds, as well as psychic/magical activity. Vision modes include infrared, psychic, x-ray (enabling the drone to see through walls with high clarity), etc. Also, the audio pickup system can be focused on particular individuals, or tuned to record multiple persons, and comes with an onboard Universal Translator to decode most known languages into English (or the user's default language of choice) and also instant access to Tobin's Spirit Guide and all known Order archives to identify paranormal phenomena.
--Propulsion is provided, depending on the model, either a small propeller or a small ion-engine designed for a minimum of heat and sound signature, although repulsorlifts are to be found on all models to aid in loiter time, maneuvering, and takeoff. Further, cloaking devices and special design cues enable a maximization of stealth.
--On some larger models such as the Eagle, one or two Mini-Anaconda 66mm replicating proton torpedo launchers can be installed depending on circumstances, fueled by internal microfusion batteries providing up to ten shots each.
