OOC: The following is modified from some old notes. Obviosuly updated. it's a bit rougher than expected.
IC:
Antonia "Fuzzy" Markham, the most famous gata. Mentally insert a tail there, folks.
The Dornie Catgirl, more commonly called "Gata" (short for the term "gentegata" or "gente de gata," not commonly used nowadays), are a now-well known ethnic minority of genetically engineered humans whose origins date from before the CRE, or even the old Workers State.
History
Formed by the same conglomerate as the Forest Sisters, the gatas were the first. Part of a project to make cute waitresses with animal ears, the company selected populations in the Philippines and Mexico as potentially useful test groups. Without going into too much detail suffice it to say experiments were done, and then suspended with the Apocalypse.
The gatas were left to fend for themselves, and generally began to break up into tribes that spread around into Mexico and the US Southwest. They tended to be strong, posing threats to local post-Apocalyptic entities such as the Navajo Nation, but tended to be treated like any other group of raiders, who just happened to be cute and have ears and tails.
Then, Jacinta de Albequerque and Elisabeta de Albequerque, later knwon as Jacinta La Valienta (the Bold) and Elisabeta The Fair, pulled some Genghis Khan-Napoleon shit and took the gatas to the next level. Sick of being bossed around and already commanding a group of vigilantes, they initiated a beatdown on Mexican cartels that got turned into the Union of Central America, a powerful empire stretching from Southern Arizona to Panama and even into the Caribbean. Ruling justly (with Elisabeta's help) with massive legal reforms, actual peace on the streets and decent standards of living (1970s standards) for the first time in recent memory, Jacinta became a folk hero in Mexico.
Among the gatas however, she became an effective God-On-Earth due to her restoration of gata pride and the unification of the gatas into one effective nation to, in Jacinta's words, "Ride on these motherfuckers poisoning our community." Only action from the Americanadian Rump State and the SOuth American Alliance prevented Jacinta from conquering everything, although the Union lasted for several generations until weak kings killed it.
With the fall of the Union into a rump state in Mexico, the gatas mostly came to reign over successor states, or just remained as large ethnic concentrations in their former territories subject to various laws, or making the laws depending on how things went.
The Dornies meanwhile, had a much more hostile relationship with them. at first. The Dornies, calling them "Neckers" actually tended to use them as POW labor, fighting a vicious war against a gata band in Southern Arizona. Eventually, with the MacIntyre administration, that was stopped once and for all. Gatas during the MacIntyreist era were integrated into the power structure, with some fussiness and the usual racial tensions, and became a common sight in Dornie areas. During the MacIntyreist Era, gata heroines became common--the biggest of which was Fuzzy Markham, legendary Ranger who did good and fought in the Civil War.
Gatas fought each other in the Civil War, as did many people.
Now, gatas remain, and are an integrated part of the Dornie state, although tensions and such remain--namely, issues of identity, race, gender, all that good shit.
